John Bertram gold mining journal : Amador County, Calif., 1853-1854.

Handwritten bound journal of a gold miner from Illinois mostly containing brief daily entries (Feb. 25, 1853 to April 12, 1854) of his final year working a mining claim along Amador Creek in Amador County, California. The entries note the weather, amount of soil moved and washed, the number of men employed, and the amount of gold they found. Tipped in at the end are three pages of manuscript account summaries of the number of men worked and dollars earned from January 15 to March 5, 1984. Some entries contain brief descriptions of his activities such as a trip to San Francisco to sell gold dust. Also includes one handwritten letter (2 p.) with three newspaper clippings about the taxation of railroads from his brother-in-law, Andrew Ross, in Ottawa, Canada, and an undated poem (2 p.), transcribed in Bertram's hand, of "Afar in the Desert" by the Canadian poet, Thomas Pringle.
